Katie Cares/Katie’s Cottage is a non-profit organization. The charity was founded by the late Kaitlyn Reimer. Her wish and dream was to make a hospital stay as stress free as possible. She wanted to give back to her community. She started her own charity after she, herself, was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 13.
Katie Cares has grown considerably since 2010. The charity is busy, we give Beanie Babies to children at various locations in local hospitals as well as the Katie Cares bags to children who are admitted into hospital care. We are in 4 hospitals providing a unique service. These gifts provide children with a sense that someone has thought of them in a stressful time. Medical staff are thrilled to be able to give away these friendly, furry friends. Tears are wiped away and smiles appear on children’s faces when they receive a bag or a Beanie Baby. Magazines are delivered to Cancer Care at Boundary Trails for patients and care givers can read current reading material while waiting for treatments to be completed. The charity also gives IPADs to sick children and blankets to those who are in care at the hospital.
Our biggest project is Katie’s Cottage. The cottage provides a home away from home. The cottage has rented 773 rooms and served over 600 guests, in 2019, who have needed a place to relax while their loved one is in hospital. Some of these guest have come from across Canada, United States, Mexico, England and Australia. We also have guests who are residents from our local communities. We provide a continental breakfast, a listening ear over a cup of coffee and fresh baking.
